The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail -- a multipurpose-use trail accommodating horse owners, bicyclists, walkers, joggers, and boat owners -- opened in Chesapeake, on April 18. The trail, actually the former U.S. RT. 17, is linear, running 8.5 miles along the Dismal Swamp Canal, which is the eastern edge of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Great Dismal Swamp Refuge. It is a nature and history devote's delight and an outdoor recreation playground for serious and casual outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Open sunrise to sunset. Observe Bottlenose Dolphins and Humpback Whales in their natural habitat aboard the Rudee Flipper and Rudee Whaler, our 65' catamaran and 80' cruiser, respectively. Your coastal adventure is led by naturalists from the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center who teach us about dolphin and whale social behaviors. Dolphin Watch and Whale Watch trips leave from the Virginia Beach Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet. We run multiple trips daily during the respective seasons of April - October for dolphin and December - March for whales. Beer, wine, food and other beverages are available on all trips. The Dominion Derby Girls are Virginia's premiere roller derby league. We are a not-for-profit organization, and all proceeds above operating costs are donated to local charities. We currently have 3 teams: the Dirty Diesel Darlins, the Femmes Fatales, and the St Brawli Girls. We bout regularly throughout the summer months towards a league championship. We also have a travel team which holds bouts against leagues from other cities. We hold all home bouts at Haygood Skating Center in Virginia Beach.
