One of few remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast, False Cape offers a chance to experience nature in a one-of-a kind setting. A huge migratory bird population and a variety of wildlife, plants and trees make the park an outdoor classroom. The park is accessible only by foot, bicycle, beach transporter, tram or boat. Tram transportation through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is available April through October. Call for tram reservations. Between Nov. 1 and March 31, access to the park is restricted to the beach or via the park’s beach transporter, the Terra-Gator. Call for Terra Gator reservations. Tram or Terra Gator transportation is not available to campers. Location: Southeast of Virginia Beach, 5 miles south of Sandbridge. No vehicular access.

On April 26, 1607, 100 English settlers landed here and established the first elective government in English America before pushing up the James River to establish Jamestown. The park offers a chance to explore a unique habitat featuring lagoons, large cypress trees and rare plants. More than 19 miles of hiking trails wind through the natural area. Climate-controlled cabins, campsites, picnic areas, boat ramps, kayak rentals, and a bicycle trail are also available. Its Chesapeake Bay Center has aquariums and a wet lab operated by the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, educational displays, historic exhibits, a camp store, an amphitheater and a Gateways Program regional welcome center. It hosts the Fall Harvest Festival in October. It’s off U.S. 60 at Cape Henry.

Fun Forest is the ultimate children’s playground, imagination center and family adventure area! It was built by over 1,800 volunteers from private, public, and community sectors, open since 1995, and winner of the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society “Best New Facility in Virginia” award in 1996. The playground has an older children’s area which encourages gross motor-skill development and features a dragon, three-way underground telephone, shaky bridge, dolphin tunnel slide, and many more challenges for the older child. The science and learning area teaches mathematics and science while children have fun playing with mirrors, whisper dishes, and a planet walk. The toddler playground invites little ones to steer a plane or truck, swing, slide and more. Fun Forest is truly a place for the entire family!
