Adam Thoroughgood is one of America's first great success stories. He came to Virginia as an indentured servant in 1621 and owned over 8,000 acres of land by the time of his death in 1640. Visitors will learn his story at the Adam Thoroughgood House which was likely built by his great grandson circa 1719. The tour of the house features a very nice collection of late 17th-century and early 18th-century English furniture. The grounds features a garden designed by Alden Hopkins in 1960. Rest Rooms. Museum Store. Available combination ticket with Francis Land and Lynnhaven Houses. Closed Monday. Please be advised that the Adam Thoroughgood House will be closed Fall 2009 for restoration work.

Explore Hampton's rich African American heritage at sites throughout the 400-year-old city. See Old Point Comfort,where the first Africans arrived in Virginia and Fort Monroe or "Freedom's Fortress," where runaway slaves were protected during the Civil War. Visit Emancipation Oak where President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was read to Hampton residents. The tree is one of six national historic landmarks on the Hampton University campus. The university museum is the oldest and largest African American museum in the nation and features artifacts and contemporary art from countries and cultures worldwide. All sites are featured in Family Tree and in the annually published Hampton Visitors Guide, both available for free through the Hampton Visitor Center.
