The oldest museum in the Northern Neck was originally built to house Charles Willson Peale's 1768 portrait of William Pitt, the Parliamentarian largely responsible for the repeal of the Stamp Act. The Museum provides exhibits and programs of the important history of Westmoreland County and its people. The exhibits include a geographical look at the region and depict life in Westmoreland County and the Northern Neck from the time of Virginia's Indians and first English settlements through to the early 20th century. It is also home of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society and the Presidents' Garden, the first garden in the region designed by Charles Gillette. The museum is open Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Sundays. Admission is free.

Westover Parish was established in 1625, and the original church was located on Westover Plantation. A new church was built at this location in 1731. Used as stable during the Civil War, it was restored to service in 1867 and has been faithfully supported ever since. Through the centuries, farmers, plantation owners, slaves and presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, Harrison, Tyler and Theodore Roosevelt have worshipped in the church. Visitors are welcome to visit the church and stroll around the cemetery.

Westover is one of the most elegant and historic colonial plantations. It was built in the first half of the 18th century by the Byrd family, and is widely known for its superb proportions. Shaded by a magnificent collection of trees, the grounds offer a commanding view of the James River and eagles soaring overhead. Visitors can walk the expansive grounds, admire the beautiful formal gardens, and look inside old outbuildings. Westover is a site on numerous trails including Civil War Trails, John Smith Adventures on the James Driving and Water Trails and the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Westover grounds and outbuildings may be toured daily. House tours may be scheduled for groups of 12 and more. Individuals may tour the house during Autumn Pilgrimage and some days during Historic Garden Week.
