St. Paul’s Catholic Church has established a docent guild so visitors are able to tour this historic church, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Tours are scheduled to coincide with “Olde Towne First,” an Olde Towne Business Association venture that encourages people to enjoy activities the first weekend of every month. The church will be open 5-8 p.m. every first Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every first Saturday. The church will also open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every first and third Monday. Because this schedule is subject to change due to weddings and funerals, visitors are asked to call first to check on the status of the tour. In its 200-year history, five different churches have been built on the church’s present site at High and Washington streets. Its history dates back to 1804.

The Hugh S. Watson Jr. Genealogical Society of Tidewater, or in short form, The Tidewater Genealogical Society, was formally organized in 1969. Mr. Watson, in whose honor the Society is named, authored a weekly genealogical feature from 1935, first for the VIRGINIA GAZETTE of Williamsburg, and then for the DAILY PRESS of Newport News until 1988. Our primary geographical area of interest is Virginia, with emphasis on that part east of the Fall Line. The Society is dedicated to encouraging and sustaining interest in genealogical affairs through education and research programs designed to assist members in their search for ancestors. Come search for your ancestors with us! The library is usually staffed with two trained genealogists. Open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-3, and Saturdays 10-4 (closed on holidays and holiday weekends).

Located in the historic Town of Smithfield is the Old Courthouse. This building was built in 1750 and used as a courthouse until 1800 when the court was moved to Isle of Wight County Courthouse. After that time, it was converted to a private three-story dwelling. The private dwelling was constructed in such a way that the original structure of the courthouse was preserved almost completely intact. In 1959 the Isle of Wight branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) began restoration of the building to its original form. It is now open to the public with no charge for admittance. The adjoining clerk's office was built in 1799 and has been used as an office or a shop since 1800.
