Bassett Hall, one of the restored historic properties at Colonial Williamsburg and the Williamsburg home of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr., re-opened to the public in December 2002. Visitors to Bassett Hall can tour the mansion and outbuildings, which include a teahouse, smokehouse, kitchen and dairy, in addition to 14 acres of gardens and extensive woodlands. Bassett Hall is located on Francis Street and is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is included in any Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket.

The Visitor Center is located in the county’s historic 1901 Clerk’s Office adjacent to Charles City Courthouse, the 3rd oldest courthouse in the country. Visitor Center exhibits invite guests to experience “the story of America in one small county” and acquaint visitors with things to see and do. Four outdoor interpretive exhibits provide visitors with information about Charles City’s historic courthouse and engagements at the courthouse during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Civil War Trails Site.

A dramatic transformation of the past decade has placed Christopher Newport University among the United States’ pre-eminent liberal arts universities. As the youngest university in Virginia, Christopher Newport University boasts a beautiful 260-acre campus nearing completion of a $500 million building campaign. The campus' crowning jewel is the new Ferguson Center for the Arts, which includes a 1,700-seat Concert Hall, a 500-seat Music and Theatre Hall and a 200-seat Studio Theatre and hosts world-class performers. Named for the leader of the expedition to Jamestown, Christopher Newport University will play a pivotal role in Jamestown 2007, the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the settlement. Built in 1920, the Hampton Carousel is one of only 170 working antique wooden carousels in the United States. Hand crafted by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for the Buckroe Beach Amusement Park, the merry-go-round's 48 horses and two chariots were hand carved by Russian, German and Italian immigrant artisans. When the Amusement Park closed, the horses were completely restored, given their own pavilion and are now a focal point of Hampton's downtown waterfront. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum introduces visitors to over 234 years of U.S. Naval history in Hampton Roads, Virginia. One of 12 officially operated U.S. Navy museums, reporting to the Naval History and Heritage Command, the museum houses a rich collection of authentic uniforms, weaponry, underwater artifacts, detailed ship models and artwork. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is located on the second level of Nauticus. Admission is free. Voted the "Best Small Museum" in 2008 by the reader's of "HamptonRoads" magazine.
