This walk-it-yourself tour is a heritage trail, which connects historic sites woven among featured attractions in downtown Norfolk. The Cannonball Trail becomes, in effect, a "story-telling stage" for interpreting Norfolk's rich and multi-faceted history.

Established in 1832, Cedar Grove is the oldest city-owned cemetery in Portsmouth. Listed on the Virginia and national registers of historic sites, the cemetery is noted for its funerary art and the civic, business, maritime, religious and military leaders who are buried there. Historical markers placed throughout the cemetery allow for self-guided tours.

Originally constructed as "Green Hill Cemetery," this 32-acre expanse of hilly terrain and ancient cedar trees has many stories to reveal. Located behind Riddick's Folly House Museum and Seaboard Station Railroad Museum Cedar Hill Cemetery (1802) is an official site of the Virginia Civil War Trails prorgram as it is the final resting place for many Confederate Generals and soldiers.

The Visitor Center is located in the county’s historic 1901 Clerk’s Office adjacent to Charles City Courthouse, the 3rd oldest courthouse in the country. Visitor Center exhibits invite guests to experience “the story of America in one small county” and acquaint visitors with things to see and do. Four outdoor interpretive exhibits provide visitors with information about Charles City’s historic courthouse and engagements at the courthouse during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Civil War Trails Site.
