Cast off for a nautical discovery aboard Hampton’s longest-running harbor cruise, the Miss Hampton II. This historic port of Hampton Roads comes alive with a unique tour that includes a visit to Fort Wool, an island fortress in the middle of the Hampton Roads harbor and an in-depth review of the mighty warships at the world’s largest naval installation, Naval Base Norfolk. You'll set sail at 10:00 a.m. for a three-hour cruise. Enjoy a box lunch or sandwich from the boat’s galley. Return to the Hampton Docks and visit the Cousteau Waterfront Gallery at the Cousteau Society’s North America headquarters. The gallery features models of The Alcyone and The Calypso, a shark cage, a hovercraft and a decompression chamber. There’s even a rhino dented jeep for viewing. Take a spin on the Hampton Carousel. Built in 1920 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, this historic attraction was originally located at Hampton's Buckroe Beach on the Chesapeake Bay. Climb aboard one of the 48 horses and two chariots that were painted by German, Indian and Russian immigrant artisans. Capture this moment on film as this makes a great photo stop. Just steps away you’ll visit the Virginia Air & Space Center, the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. Experience the Adventures in Flight and Space Quest galleries and more than 100 “hand-on” exhibits that tell the story of air and space exploration. See the Apollo 12 Command Module, a Mars meteorite and a three-billion year-old moon rock! View a film in 3-D at the Riverside IMAX Theater at the Air & Space Center. This experience offers you an unparalleled sense of realism and motion as images of awesome power are projected onto a five-story screen, enhanced by 16,000 watts of digital sound. Browse quaint shops and art galleries on the tree lined streets or enjoy dinner at one of Hampton’s waterfront eateries before you depart for home.

Visit the Hampton History Museum. As the history of Hampton parallels major events in American history, so too is the city's history intertwined with the story and contributions of African Americans to our country. Tour the Hampton University Museum Founded in 1868, the same year as the university, it is among the oldest museums in Virginia and features one of the most exceptional collections of Arfican, Native-American and African-American art in the United States. While on campus see the Emancipation Oak, where Hampton residents gathered in 1863 to hear the Emancipation Proclamation read for the first time. Enjoy a gourmet lunch in the beautifully restored Chamberlin. Once a grand and historic hotel built in 1928, The Chamberlin is now a waterfront retirement community. After lunch, tour the The Chamberlin's collection of memorabilia from a bygone era. Tour Historic Fort Monroe and the Casemate Museum. It was on this site in 1619 at Old Point Comfort that “twenty and odd” Africans first arrived on Virginia soil. More than two centuries later in May 1861, Major General Benjamin Butler accepted three runaway slaves under the declaration that they were "contraband of war" and would therefore not be returned to their owners. As news of this extraordinary development spread, Fort Monroe quickly earned the nickname "Freedom's Fortress." Visit the Virginia Air & Space Center. An exhibit on the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black aviators to fly for the U.S. in wartime combat missions, chronicles the African American's role in the Army Air Corps. Include an IMAX® film for a truly spectacular visit. Enjoy the history of Little England Chapel. Built in 1879, the chapel is the only known African missionary chapel in Virginia. Discover Aberdeen Gardens, a historic neighborhood built for and by African Americans in 1935 as part of F.D.R.’s New Deal Settlement. Enjoy dinner and shopping at the Peninsula Town Center before departing for home.

Established in 1634 as one of the original 8 shires of the Virginia Colony, this rural community is rich in history, but the pastoral setting, historic attractions & downtown historic district of Smithfield, a charming rivertown, make the area a very popular destination for those who love the outdoors as well. Smithfield & Isle of Wight County offer a great variety of natural habitats and our unique birding location - at the southern end of the northern nesting birds range and at the northern end of the southern range - make it ideal for wildlife observation opportunities. All of our parks are open year-round and offer ample free parking and many amenities such as picnic areas, walking trails and clean facilities. Great birding spots in Smithfield & Isle of Wight include: Fort Boykin Historic Park, Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area, Cypress Springs Farm and Carrollton Nike Park - all of which are listed on the "Tidewater Loop" of the Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail. The brand new Windsor Castle Park, located right in the heart of Smithfield, with miles of walking trails and foot bridges, covering a wide range of habitats, will be the hub of your birding experience. The park also offers a kayak/canoe launch, dog park and picnic areas. But what really makes the area special is that after your outdoor adventure, you can simply relax and take in the delights of shopping & dining in downtown Smithfield. Stop by the Visitor Center - also home to the Arts Center @ 319 - offering tourist information, a gallery/gift shop & the chance to chat with resident artists. Or visit one of our many historic sites, including the Isle of Wight Museum, Schoolhouse Museum, Historic St. Luke’s Church, the Old Courthouse of 1750, Boykin’s Tavern and Fort Huger. Looking for an elegant B&B, or beautiful waterfront setting? You'll find comfortable and distinctly different accommodations to choose from in this eco-friendly community.
